One of the more prominent American artists working in the realist tradition during the first half of the 20th century, Robert Hogg Nisbet (1879-1961) was elected a full member of the National Academy in 1928 and exhibited widely during his long and successful career. Nisbet was also one of the original incorporators of the Society of American Etchers and a member of the Philadelphia Society of Etchers. He is most often associated with the Old Lyme colony of artists in Connecticut, the state where he lived for many years. This fine original pencil drawing by Nisbet depicts a life boat with passengers in the foreground and a sinking ship in the distance. (There is also what appears to me to be a whale to the right of the sinking ship.) Signed by the artist at the lower right, the drawing measures 9 inches by 11 5/8 inches (image size). The total sheet size for this drawing is 11 inches by 13 1/2 inches.The drawing, which probably dates from the 1930s, is free of rips or tears. There is some creasing to the corners, including several sharp creases which enter the image at the lower right.
