Original Stump Speaker cast iron mechanical bank. This bank was patented in 1886 & was designed by Charles G. Shepard & Peter Adams, Jr. The bank was manufactured by the Shepard Hardware Company of Buffalo, New York. Incised in the casting on the bottom of the baseplate is the marking: \"Pat. June 8, 1886\". The bank measures 9 7/8 inches tall. The base is 4 31/32 inches wide by 3 15/16 inches deep. The bank weighs 4 pounds 9 ounces.
When the lever on the top right is pressed down the hand moves downward & drops the coin out of the hand in to the bag which opens on the top of the base. When the lever is pressed the jaw also moves. The right side of the bag should sit flush against the left side of the back when the bank is not operating.The right side of the bag on our bank leans open a trifle when the bank is not operating. A slight adjustment, by someone skilled in such matters, would probably correct this minor point. The bank still retains the vast majority of the all original paint. The left side panel on the bank has more wear than the other panels.The paint has a very pleasing & rich patina. It is easy to see that some areas (especially the top) of the bank could be professionally cleaned up, if desired, to clearly show even more of the all original paint. This example is entirely original. There is no touch up to the paint. There are no chips, no cracks, no replaced parts, & no repairs. The bank is missing the key lock trap which would fit in the panel on the back side.Please examine the clear photos that we have provided & purchase based on your own opinion as to the condition.
