Post Civil War Era 1880s. The 71st took an active part in the Civil War for the North. Original New York 71st Militia Regiment Uniform Button made in the 1880s. Second Regiment Excelsior, or Sickles\' Brigade, Jackson Light Regiment. Commenced by Col. George B. Hall, April 25, 1861. In May, 1861, the 71st joined the Excelsior Brigade raised by General Sickles under authority of the War Department, as its Second Regiment. The 71st was originally composed of companies from New York City, Olean, Great Valley, Colchester and Kingston, Newark and Orange, New Jersey. The 71st was present at the Battle of Fair Oaks, and lost 118 killed, wounded or missing during the 7 day battle. Went on to support General Pope at Manassas and at Kettle Run, 1st Battle of Bull Run and lost 114 out of 250 engaged. Col. Burnside\'s after-action report of July 24, 1861 noted: \"I beg to again mention the bravery and steadiness manifested by Colonel Martin and his entire Regiment, the 71st, both on the field and during the retreat.\" In April 1863, the Chancellorsville Campaign, the 71st took a prominent part. From there, the 71st marched to Gettysburg and participated in the thick of the fighting with a loss of 91 killed, wounded or missing. The 71st Militia served in the defense of Harrisburg during the Battle of Gettysburg. Participated in the Wilderness Campaign, Spottsylvania, Cold Harbor and Petersburg. There is a large Monument at Gettysburg honoring the 70th, 71st, 72d, and the 74th New York Infantry. Button measures 7/8\" diameter.collector4april
