This sale is for one polished piece of Orthoceras in matrix.There are 2 orthoceras\' on top and one on the bottom.This piece is polished on the upper side only.It measures 5 3/8\" x 1 3/4\" x 5/8\" and weighs 121 grams

Orthoceras are extinct sea animals, an ancient mollusk, thatwere ancestors of the modern day squid. They lived during the Ordovician periodabout 500 million years ago. Orthoceras, meaning “straight horn”, swam in warmand shallow waters by pushing water out of their body tube called a siphuncle.This tube was also used a a buoyancy device by leaving air in the chamber. Orthoceras were advanced invertebrates having eyes, jawsand ink sacs much like the present day squid. Orthoceras was a carnivorous,shelled cephalopod what at times grew to be 6 feet long. This specimen is fromthe Atlas Mountains of Morocco.
