OVID’S ‘METAMORPHOSIS’ TRANSLATED BY GEORGE SANDYS, PUBLISHED IN FOLIO AT LONDON IN 1632, ADORNED WITH A FINE ENGRAVED TITLE, FRONTISPIECE AND 12 FULL-PAGE ENGRAVED PLATES (SEVERAL BY CLEYN AND SLAVER), AND AUGMENTED BY THE ADDITION OF SANDYS’ TRANSLATION OF THE FIRST BOOK OF VIRGIL’S ‘AENEID.’ SANDYS’ OVID IS THE FIRST WORK OF LITERARY IMPORTANCE COMPOSED IN ENGLISH IN AMERICA, AND THIS IS THE FIRST ILLUSTRATED EDITION. A VERY ATTRACTIVE EXAMPLE INTERNALLY, WITH EXCELLENT IMPRESSIONS OF THE PLATES.

The full title reads as follows:

“Ovids Metamorphosis Englished, Mythologiz’d, And Represented in Figures. / An Essay to the Translation of Virgil’s Aeneis. / By G.S. / Imprinted at Oxford. / By Iohn Lichfield. An. Dom. MDCXXXII [1632]. / Cum Privilegio ad imprimendum hanc Ovidij / Translationem.”

Duyckinck states the following concerning Sandys’ Ovid:

“The first English literary production penned in America, at least which has any rank or name in the general history of literature, is the translation of Ovid’s Metamorphoses, by George Sandys, [first] printed in folio in London in 1626 [without illustrations; first illustrated in this 1632 edition]. The writer was the distinguished traveller, whose book on the countries of the Mediterranean and the Holy Land, is still perused with interest by curious readers. It was some time after his return from the East that he was employed in the government of the Colony in Virginia, where he held the post of treasurer of the company [in 1621]. There, on the banks of James river, he translated Ovid, under circumstances of which he has left a memorial in his dedication of the work to King Charles 1.”

Stith, in his “History of Virginia,” states the following:

“In the Midst of these Tumults and Alarms, the Muses were not silent. For at this time, Mr. George Sandys, the Company’s Treasurer of Virginia, made his translation of Ovid’s Metamorphoses, a very laudable Performance for the Times.”

Ovid’s “Metamorphoses,” of course, are some of the most famous stories to survive from antiquity; they tell, essentially, a history of the world in dactylic hexameter, the meter of the epics. Ovid’s stories are as foundational to Western literature as any other book written; they include the story of Io and Jupiter, the stories of Cadmus, Pyramus and Thisbe (of Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”), Philomela, Andromeda, Proserpina, Arachne, Niobe, Daedalus and Icarus, Orpheus and Eurydice, Hercules, Atalanta, Romulus, Pythagorus, Hippolytus, Caesar, and the great contest between Ajax and Odysseus for the arms of Achilles.

The volume is textually complete and is paginated as follows: [20], 38, [6], 51-124, 145-487, [1], 491-549, [1], plus the engraved title, Frontis and the 12 full-page plates. 15 plates plus the engraved title and the Frontis are called for; therefore, three plates are lacking. The volume measures about 33.5 cm by 22.0 cm by 5.0 cm. Each leaf measures about 325 mm by 205 mm.

Internally, the volume is in very good condition, with clean pages, clear print and ample margins throughout, but with some restoration (not affecting the text) and a few small tears or chips (again not affecting the text) of the outer margins upon the first 53 pages. The plates are excellent impressions in all cases. Generally, the internal condition of the volume is quite pleasing. The volume is bound in full modern half-calf. The binding is also in excellent condition, with strong hinges, a strong book-block and only minor wear at the edges and corners. PLEASE CONSULT THE PHOTOS BELOW IN ORDER TO GAIN THE BEST POSSIBLE UNDERSTANDING OF THE VOLUME’S CONDITION.
