For sale is an exceptionally rare First Issue/First Edition ofThe Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club, by Charles Dickens. Published by Chapman and Hall, London, 1837.624p.p. 8vo. The full suite of 39 plates by Phiz here present.This scarce example boasts the majority of Smith\'s first issue text points.
Bound in a fine and most desirable contemporary tan calf over marbled boards. Raised bands and ornate and handsome panels tooled in gilt; the title tooled directly in gilt to a black morocco label. Original plain endpapers.
Externally it remains in pleasing order. There is trivial surface rubbing in places, but this is to be expected. The hinges are very firm and the gutters intact. Internally it is delightfully clean to the text block, and the plates aresomewhatcleaner than oftenencountered, while some have the predictable spotting and toning.
Overall, this an extremely sought after, handsome and rare early example of this famous title. Early Issue, and bound in a fine contemporary binding, this beautifully preserved first edition would grace any collection and it comes highly recommended.
