POLO MATCH: This is an extremely fine antique Persian miniature painting of six players engaged in a game of polo. It is widely thought that polo is the oldest team sport in existence, and at the very least it is clear that the sport dates back more than 2500 years in Persia.
While we have been art dealers for more than 50 years, we have very little experience with miniatures such as this; based on the style of this painting and on the document and the seals which are on the backing sheet, we believe it to be from the 19th century. It came to us with a few Persian letters dating to the 1820\'s. We do not know if the letters are in some way related to the painting. We only know that the Boston collector who owned them had them together in his collection.This overall painting and document is extremely attractive, offering the feeling of a beautiful antique Persian tile. The sheet measures about 13 inches by 8 1/2 inches, and the painting measures about 5 x 7 1/8 inches. The detail of the faces, clothing and horses is exceptional, as can be seen in the close-up photo we have included.
