For your considerationis this ancient tripodal (three-legged) metateor grinding stone carved from a single slab of volcanic rock, the rimembellished with a closely-spaced notch design representing a stylized friezeof ritual trophy-heads.

Ancient utensils of this type were used for variouspurposes; to grind corn and other foodstuffs

into flour and also as ceremonialparaphernalia; metates often formedpart of the mortuary furnishings.

Numerous unused metateshave been recovered from graves without their (usually) accompanying manos orgrinding stones, pointing to a significance greater than exclusively utilitarian grinding. In view of the frequencyand importance of the metate as a burial artifact, it appears to have beensymbolically associated with life, death and rebirth. The metate, given its ritual importance, may have also served as a throne.

The elaborate rim embellishment on this metate suggests a ceremonial function; it is oval in configurationwith a deeply concave surface and measures 20\" long x 13.5\" wide x 76/8\" high. It weighs a substantial 20.5 lbs. and aside from aninsignificant rim repair, it is in excellent unused condition, pointing to aceremonial function.
