HERE’S THE EXCEEDINGLY RARE ORIGINAL VINTAGE SEPTEMBER 1959 (VOL. 10, NO. 3) SOFTCOVER NEWSLETTER “THE CROSS-COUNTRY CRAFTSMAN”!

Please Note: This newsletter-format publication began in 1950 to provide highlights about activities of professional American craftsmen and the institutions that promoted the modern hand-made object in pottery and ceramics, glass, enamels, metalwork of all types, jewelry, furniture, woodwork, textiles and weaving, among other related media. Occasionally, this newsletter provided a more detailed article about an individual craftsman or a craft exhibition and/or competition. Generally, however, the intent was to provide snippets of information about as many craftsmen and events involving professional crafts as possible, from the west coast to the east coast and every state in between. To this end, “The Cross-Country Craftsmen” contains highly important information that will not be found in any other vintage publications related to modern crafts. Therefore, most of these newsletters are made up of primarily text and only a few photographs. In certain issues, there is only text.

Here, in this exceedingly rare 6-page original vintage September 1959 (Vol. 10, No. 3) issue of “The Cross-Country Craftsmen,” modern studio glass artist Priscilla Manning Porter is featured in a monograph article on the newsletter’s front cover and on pages two (2) and six (6), with two additional photographs on page three (3). Porter is shown on the newsletter’s front cover working in her studio and there are six additional photographs on other pages showing another image of Porter working in her studio and numerous examples of her kiln-fired studio art glass. The article itself provides important background information about Porter and then discusses some of her activities as a professional glass artist. Remember, this is back in 1959.

Also, there is 1-page article about the Second International Congress of Contemporary Ceramics held in Ostend, Belgium. In addition, there’s a 1-page article about the Sixth Annual York State Craft Fair held in Ithaca, New York. A photograph that accompanies the article shows the jurors James Secrest, Lawrence Copeland, Just Lunning, and Margaret Carnahan. The four jurors are reviewing examples of modern turned wood by Nelson Delevan of Interlaken, New York. Other artists who are discussed in the article but whose works are not shown include: Toni Catanzaro, Frances Holmes Boothby, Ronald Hayes Pearson, John Tuska, John Loree, Hobart Cowles, Charlotte Malten, Edgar Young, Alfred Vincent, Doris Clement, Zelda Strecker, Janet Doub Erickson, Luella Williams, Judith Ann Bryden, Marianne Von Dobeneck, and Robert Turner.

An additional photograph shows a modern tapestry weaving titled “Landscape with White Tree” created by Margreth Breuer of St. Paul, Minnesota, which won an award in the 1959 Midwest Designer Craftsmen exhibition.
