A fine example of the Madoura vase, the Young Wood-Owl(Chouetton) from 1952 embodies the key characteristics pertinent to Picasso’sceramic body of work. Frequent in his pottery, the motive of the owl is herepresented in a particularly minimalistic fashion, subtly evoking the art ofAfrican masks. The combination of earthy, dark and brown tones on a white bodybrings forth an especially delicate expression of a young owl as if sitting ona branch, observing. With a bird’s face adorning each side of the vase, Picassoabandons the tradition of representation and enters the domain of abstraction, materializing an idea of the owl and its neck-turning capabilities, rather thana literal interpretation of the subject. Still, the two faces showcase twodistinctively different emotions, confronting contempt to coyness, as ifdescribing the duality found in every human being. While seemingly classical, the form of the vase is, in fact, an abstraction of the owl’s body, reflectingPicasso’s masterful imagination and evoking the same contemplative process thatled to the creation of the famous “Bull’s Head”. The earthy and tactile natureof clay provides an organic quality to the work, while its simplicity continuesto evoke the great mind of the 20th-century master.

Manufactured in 1952, during the period in which Picassofrequented the Madoura Pottery workshop in Vallauris, the Young-Owl Vase(Chouetton) is made of white earthenware clay, with drawings in oxides incisedwith a knife on white glaze.

As a highly collectible Picasso’s vase, Chouetton has been adesired item over the years. Vases from the same edition sold in sale havereached the prices over $6,000 in 2016.

About Pablo Picasso

A man of unparalleled talent, Pablo Picasso was the mostinfluential figure in the 20th-century art. With an unequivocal sense ofinvention, he was devoted to creating art throughout his life, crossing mediawith utter ease and elegance, always following his limitless imagination as theultimate indicator of truth. Together with Georges Braque, Picasso fathered oneof the most progressive art movements - Cubism, rethinking the representationof the three-dimensional space on a two-dimensional surface in a radical way.Inspired by the art of Africa and the Iberian peninsula, his ideas and worksleft a deep mark on other modernist movements, including Expressionism andSurrealism. His most famous work, the powerful “Guernica” (1937), was createdin reaction to the Spanish Civil War, today celebrated as the supreme exampleof anti-war art. Resolute and vital throughout his life, Picasso left behind acolossal body of work of paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, ceramics, costumes and stage set designs.

With a name synonymous with greatness, Picasso is considereda legend. He was infamous for his many passionate relationships with women, aswell as for his charisma. With an ego to match his gift, the great artist oncesaid about himself: “My mother said to me, \'If you are a soldier, you willbecome a general. If you are a monk, you will become the Pope.\' Instead, I wasa painter, and became Picasso.”

Pablo Picasso was born in Málaga, Spain, in 1881. He livedin Paris and Mougins, France, where he died in 1973.
