Pacific NW Coastal Tribal Salish Cedar Yellow Cedar Carving of Seal Pup/Signed:
$24.49

Up for sale is a delightful yellow cedar carving of a seal pup. Measures 10\"/ 25 cm. from rounded backside to tip of nose and 3.5\"/ 8.5 cm. from flipper to curve of its back.
Beautifully carved. Signed on back in ink \"Hand Carved in Yellow Cedar by Cliff Delorme Langley BC Canada\".
Yellow cedar as a carving medium is highly prized amongst tribal First Nations carvers in the Pacific Northwest. Commonly found in coastal sub-alpine forests from Vancouver Island to Alaska, mostly west of the Coastal and Cascade mountains. Considered more valuable than red cedar because of its tough, straight grained wood and because it\'s finer, softer and lighter in colour than red cedar when dried.
The round harbour seal is an important family crest in the Pacific NW. It was a favourite theme of bowl carvers historically because the seal was an important source of oil and its meat and blubber were highly prized offerings at potlatches. Perched on its round belly on a rock, the seal is a familiar sight to coast travellers.
Clearly the work of a skilled artisan. Note the bevelled edge to the ovoid forms and the way the grain has been utilised to mimic fur. Lots of character in this sweet piece of native art.

The Fine Print:
***I ‘m a woman who loves to travel and have spent a‘longish’ and lucky lifetime exploring many parts of the world. Most of theitems I list have at one time been used and/or displayed in my home. Editing myvarious collections on allows me tocontinue to browse sales, flea markets and estate sales and has turned intoa very enjoyable hobby. By far the biggest ‘pay-off’ has been the varied andinteresting people I’m meeting from ‘anywhere and everywhere’.
My aim is to be scrupulously accurate in the descriptionof the articles I sell. Take the time to look closely at the photos. Many of myitems are older and, with age comes wrinkles (trust me I know!).Manytimes, not always, it ‘s the flaws that give an item its desirable character.
If there’s something I’ve naively mis-identified,please let me know. I will always post new information on the listing so scrollto the bottom of the description to check. Also, feel free to ask questions andI’ll get back to you as soon as I can. If you’re not satisfied with yourpurchase, then ultimately, neither am I!
Unless noted otherwise, I will happily ship itemsworldwide.Butthe shipping quote given in the listing appliesto North America (Canada and the United States) only! It is the same price forboth. If you live anywhere else, please contact me before the listing ends so Ican give you shipping options to consider.
American buyers, please note that I usually travelacross the border to the United States on Wednesday to ship parcels to you. Ifyou have not paid by this time, then I may wait until the following week toship as shipping from my home Canada is generally far in excess of the shippingquote I\'ve posted. Prompt payment (i.e. within 2-3 days of the listing ending),is therefore in your best interest. And mine!
And yes, I happily combine shipping if you’re buyingmultiple items.
Thanks for looking!
