Pair King George VI Coronation Beaker Queen Elizabeth May 1937 Melhuish Wine Vtg:
$25.99

Up from the Tin Lizzy Building, we have an antique pair of Porcelain Beakers/Drinking Cups that were made to commemorate the May 12, 1937 Coronation of King George VI. On the front, it shows pictures of both King George VI and his wife, Queen Elizabeth with graphics of the Royal Flags and Insignia, together with the date of May 1937. This was an advertising piece that was probably given as a gift to certain people or customers of the Merchant... on the back of the beaker, it reads \'Compliments of Melhuish, Wine & Spirit Merchant, Erdington\'. Erdington is a suburb and ward of Birmingham, England. So these items were both a Celebratory Item to mark the Coronation but it was also a fine way to advertise and promote one\'s own company! These would be a wonderful addition to anyone\'s British Monarchy Collection or a nice gift to give to a \'Royal Watcher.\'

\"Last name: Melhuish: This very unusual and interesting name is of medieval English origins. It is locational from a now lost medieval village in the county of Devonshire called in the 13th century \"Melehewis\". The derivation is from the Olde English pre 7th century words \"maele\", meaning brightly coloured, and \"hiwisc\", a hide of land. A hide was an area considered suitably large for a family of four to subsist on, or roughly the area that could be ploughed by one plough in one year, whilst \"brightly coloured\" in this sense may have a transferred meaning of \"good land\". The village is recorded in the register of Hundred Rolls along with Chagkford, Churiton, Eghbeare and Foleford. Locational surnames usually developed when former inhabitants of a place moved to another area, often to seek work, and were best identified by the name of their birthplace. Spelling being at best erractic and local dialects very thick, soon lead to the development of \"sounds like\" spellings. In this case spellings of the name include: Melheuse, Mellhewes, Melhuse, Mellhush, Mellhuish and Mellish.\"
