OUTSTANDING PAIR OF VICTORIAN ENGLISH STERLING SILVER CANDLESTICKS
MADE BY CHARLES BOYNTON II LONDON 1897
Pleased to offer this wonderful pair of ornamental sterling candlesticks. Of classic and popular design, this style was copied by numerous makers in the years after 1900. Of neo classic design the candlesticks stand 10 inches in height and are 4 1/2 inches on square cut corner swept bases. The pair weighs 1185 grams and is weighted.
The circular urn style capitals are emblellished with ribbons and swags connected by garlands.Tapering to gadrooned icanthus leaves to a classic roman style stepped base. The wax drips fit firmly and bear a beaded rim. Matching punches for assayed English silver, makers mark, city and date code, displayed clearly on each bobeche.
Standing atop a four sided ornamental column is a square stepped knob with each side bearing a floral rosette amidst vertical pales. Each side of the column bears a rams head with swags and garland hanging from the horns. Repeating the pattern from the upper urns, each side bears a ribbon connected vertically with garland surrounding a small blank cartouche, and culminating in a nested hanging floral buds.
The tapering and sloped base of the column, continues with various stepped levels incorporating the incanthus leaves, and terraced gardooning that is also carried onto the main base seperating each side panel of the column. Each panel bears a classic Grecian urn with rams head handles. The base is bordered by matching beading as seen on the wax drips.
The side of each bases is clearly punched with the makers mark of CB in two conjoined circles for Charles Boynton II. The lion passant for assayed English silver, the leopard\'s head for London, and the date code of a small \"b\" in a square for 1897.Charles Boyton (II)1862..1899
