Extremely rare old & hard to find - mid 19th century large wooden hay forks

A pair of 19thc early handmade ash & hickory hay forks from New York State in very good condition. The first is constructed of ash and has wood blocks and wires separating three tines or prongs. The second has a single block of wood separating the three tines and is made of worn hickory. Three tines forks were considered the optimum number on wooden forks for effective lifting of sheaves of hay on the farm in those days. Both of these beautiful hay forks were found on an upstate New York farm. Such hay forks are popular décor motifs nowadays and both are in great condition and ready for hanging on a wall or next to the hearth of a fireplace. It is rare to find American forks from this era and in such great condition. Although these items were utilitarian, many today consider them folk art.
