ITEM DESCRIPTION
Item Description
Up for your consideration is a superb pair of late 19th C. French Empire candelabra, c. 1890. The candelabra are large and heavy, measuring 28\" each and weighing 25 lbs. each. They are made of mercury-gilded bronze, with a black onyx base. Both pieces are in excellent condition, as described below.
Raised on two paw feet and two round feet. A band of bronze on theblack onyxbase depicts a Grecian scene. A female figure supports an urn on her head which leads into the five sockets, with an additional raised socket. The piece additionallybears decorative criss-crossing chains from arm to arm, The candelabra measure28\" tall from the base to the top socket, and about12\" wide and 12\" deep.
Overall, the candelabra are in excellent condition. The bronze portions are complete, and original. The gilt shows moderate, but even wear throughout. There are some minor \"fleabites\" to the onyx, but nothingnotable or distracting. Two of the chains on one candelabrum have been replaced, and one of the fitted caps to the cups has a crack (as shown). The upper portion, where the stem holding the arms of the candelabra attach to the gilded figure is held in place by a screw-based mechanism. Each piece is a bit loose where these pieces attach. It may be wise to unscrew this portionfor safety during shipping. Also, there are small holes drilled in the upper portions of the candle cups,presumably for wiring.
