These 2covered crocks were Made in France (Impressed mark on base) and are salt glazedpottery in shades of brown. The tops of both crocks is left unglazed. Theinterior is glazed. They have rounded ear handles on the sides. The inside of the lid of the larger one hasthe number 3. The other one is marked 1 on the inside of the lid. Both are very attractive vintage hand glazedFrench pottery.

Stoneware storage vesselsHeavy salt glazed \'grès\' stoneware preserving-pickling crocks or storage jars with unglazed breathable lids, and thick heavy sides which help keep their contents cool. Traditionally used for the fermentation of sauerkraut but more commonly perhaps for the storage of any wet and dry goods, foodstuffs, or in the case of the largest, breads. From a pottery established in 1847 in Argent sur Sauldre, near Orléans, central France - a region abundant with both the wood used to fuel nineteenth century kilns, as well as the alluvial fire clays used in the production of poterie grès. Whilst the kilns may now be temperature controlled and differently powered, the materials, methods, and hand turning techniques have remained largely unchanged through the generations\"

Condition: #3 Crock: There is a small chip on the inside of the base rim (itdoesn\'t show with lid on). There are acouple of bumps in the glaze from when it was made. #1 Crock: The lid has a few shallow chips onthe inside edge and one nick on the outside at the bottom of the rim. (seepics).

Dimensions: #3: 7 1/2\" tall including lid, 53/4\" across, #1: 5 1/2\" tall including lid, 4 3/4\" across.
