Pair of French Empire-Style Gilt and Patinated Bronze Candleholders, each pedestal surmounted by a jewel-eyed griffin issuing engine-turned drip pans and urn-form candle nozzles on a square plinth. The drip pans and urn-forms are finely cut. Originally purchased from New Orleans sale, thus the description above. H. 9-3/8\", W. 3\", D. 3\". Presumably late 1800\'s to early 1900\'s. In excellent condition.
The candleholders appear to have been done with ormolu as indicated by the gold coloring on the inside base of the holders. The ormolu is also apparent on the base and upper platform as opposed to brass plating. As for details, the acanthus ornaments on the columns and the bases themselves appear to have been cast with moderate detail. The griffin has fine detailing with the feather barbs clearly visible. The upper candle holder is finely cut. The griffins are of an antique bronze color while the rectangular metal columns appear to have had an antique bronze chemical wash applied to give it the patina. Overall these have nice detail to quite fine detail. As for a maker\'s mark, there is none. Judging from the hardware used to put these together I would estimate they are from the late 1920\'s to early 1930\'s. The nuts holding the threaded rod are six sided as opposed to 4-sided like you would see in the 1800\'s. This is merely my guess and I am not an expert, but rather someone who has purchased enough antiques to have some knowledge of time periods. The holders have felt over the cavity of the bases to protect the surface on which it resides.
