Pair of matching Large Heavy Solid Bronze Antique Sconces from E. F. Caldwell Co. Each sconce measures over 14\" tall without bulbs. Very early production, probably 1900 or earlier. Each sconces weighs about 11 pounds with a combined weight of nearly 22 pounds for both wall lights. Each sconce can handle five bulbs (not included).Originallyset up for a center gas light but deleted withtheadvent of electricity. This set was acquired from the interior of a New York building many years ago. Please see the many photographs showing the amazing detail of these sconces. In excellent condition for the age of the pieces. Occasional solder issue with the cap that covers the electrical box but that can be remedied by someone who knows how to solder (that is not me). No breaks or damage. Most of the caps are signed with Caldwell\'s \"C\" in the diamond mark (hard to photograph).
I will be offering the most amazing collection of antique lighting from a major collection over the next year. The pieces are mostly from the E. F. Caldwell Company of New York City and cover production from 1895 - 1945. These pieces are not cheaply made like the modern copies. Each piece comes with a unique story and can be tracked back, in most cases, to the original client. When possible an original image of the piece will be supplied. Additionally, the New York Public Library holds the customer archives and they can be searched to determine for whom the piece was created. Caldwell sold to only the wealthiest of customers and pieces fromthefirm are usually bespoke, created just for Rockefeller, Jay Gould, Carnegie, Morgan and a who\'s-who of thewealthiestmenandwomen in the United States. When you purchase one a piece from the E. F. Caldwell Company, you are truly creating a link between the Gilded Age and today. You will not find pieces like this in a big box store.the Gilded Age and today. You will not find pieces like this in a big box store.
I have been contacted a few times by buyers who question whether all pieces from the Edward F. Caldwell Co. are always marked with the \"C\" in the diamond mark. The short answer is \"No\". Caldwell did sign most pieces but there seemed to be no steadfast rule that each piece needed to be signed. Adding to the confusion is the fact that the signature often appeared stamped into afiberboard backing that was attached to many sconces with two small set screws. The backs were often lost over the years and, with them, the signature. For those interested in authenticating production from the Caldwell Co., it is advisable to turn to the excellent on-line photographic archives supplied by the Smithsonian Museum branch in Manhattan or to look at the web site dedicated to the E. F. Caldwell Co. It is a \"dot ORG\" site. The archives provide proof positive regarding the production of most Caldwell pieces and allow the owner to date the pieces and, onoccasion, discover for whom the lighting piece was created.
