Pasquale Giovanni Napolitano, watercolor painting on paperentitled “Flight to Egypt” on the matte beneath the painting, signed \"P G Napolitano\" and with initials \"PGN\" in pencil in the lower right,circa 1920s, about 7 1/2 by 10 inches in a 15 3/4 by 19 inch matte, in very good condition (thepainting has been glued to a larger sheet of heavy paper along the edges and the glue has come through; and the matte is damaged along the right side). The painting comes from the artist\'s estate. The artist was a devout Catholic and often painted pictures of scenes from the bible.
According to AskArt.com, PasqualeGiovanni Napolitano (1901 – 2001) was born in Naples, Italy and immigrated toLos Angeles with his family when he was 11 years old. He studied at the Otis Art Institute underJulia Wendt and F. Tolles Chamberlain. Afterstudies in Germany, he returned to Los Angeles and apprenticed to muralistHerman Sachs while on the Public Works of Art Project. Merle Armitage, then Regional Director of thePWAP wrote a book entitled Napolitano in 1935 that reproduced 15 works by theartist and included a signed print. Hetaught sculpture at Chouinard in 1937-38.He also exhibited widely in local shows and works of his were acquiredby the Los Angeles Museum of Art and the de Young Museum in San Francisco.
