1940 PEARL HARBOR 1940 SUBMARINE SQUADRON FOUR TO F.W. SCANLAND SENIOR THIS BOWL IS A PAUL REVERE REPRO AN HAS NOT BEEN CLEANED AN HAS SOME LIGHT SCRATCHES. JUST UPDATED WITH NAVAL CROSS COPY,COMMODORE FRANCIS WORTH SCANLAND 1889-1946 GRADUATED US NAVAL ACADEMY CLASS OF 1909.ONE OF THE NAVY'S FIRST SUBMARINERS HE SERVED IN AND COMMANDED SUBS FROM 1914 UNTIL 1940 WHEN HE WAS IN COMMAND OF 5TH SUBMARINE SQUADRON AN SUBMARINE BASE PEARL HARBOR.IN 1941 HE WAS COMMANDING U.S.S. NEVADA WHEN SHE WAS PUT OUT OF COMMISSION DURING JAPANESE ATTACK AT PEARL HARBOR. FOLLOWING THE ATTACK HE TOOK COMMAND OF THE U.S.S. ASTORIA BRINGING SAFELY THROUGH THE BATTLES UP TO AN INCLUDING THE BATTLE OF MIDWAY FOR WHICH ACTIONS HE WAS ADWARDED THE NAVY CROSS FOR GALLANTRY IN BATTLE!!THIS WEIGHS OVER 3 LBS AN IS 11 1/2"×11 1/2"AT TOP 6" tall. WITH THIS LOT will be a certified copy of Commodore Scanland being accepted to Naval Academy at 16 1/2 years old in 1905. That is in good condition it looks old does have some creasing.Next is a 1946 synopsis of his career,sent to his Widow. This hero enlisted at 16 an died with his uniform still ON in 1946. Added is a picture of the Commander 10"×8" framed with a note card on the back with some of his achievements.WOW He did some amazing things saved the Yorktown crew as the boat was sinking he used the Astoria to rescue many hundreds of men off the Yorktown as well as Frank Jack.PEARL HARBOR he was C.O. of the Nevada until it was sunk an then was moved to the Astoria when her commander had a nervous breakdown. Before that he was C.O. of submarine squadron four,ten,nine an five so much more!!! Look at those subs an ask yourself would you. It takes a special Hero .Also a list of medals to long to list though he an his son were only father son to get NAVY CROSS IN WW11 as well as Yangtze an on an on. There is two pages out of a scrapbook one of a sub fleet in Mobile Alabama. This paper its glued on is very brittle an the pic is ok but shows some age from the early 1900's on the back it has three neat old pictures. Then the picture of F.W.Scanland in 1915 it is in ok shape but whats its glued to is a little rough. Also on the back is a picture of his wife with there two kids Bob an F.W.SCANLAND Jr 1915. Jr went on to be a hero as well. There is 5 pages of written history two pages of scrapbook with 6 pictures an the large sterling bowl an f ramed picture.This is your only chance to own a Hero's award that says PEARL HARBOR AN WAS APART OF THIS WAR!!
