An essential oil is a liquid that is generally distilled (most frequently by steam or water) from the leaves, stems, flowers, bark, roots, or other elements of a plant. Essential oils are usually volatile, which means they evaporate more quickly than carrier oils. Essential oils are usually much lighter than carrier oils, although some are quite thick and sticky. Most essential oils are clear, but some oils such as patchouli, orange and lemongrass can be amber or yellow in color, and some, such as German chamomile and milfoil or yarrow, can be a wonderful blue color.

Essential oils contain the true essence of the plant it was derived from. Essential oils are highly concentrated and a little goes a long way. They should never be used internally, and they should not be used undiluted on the skin unless directed by a qualified practitioner.
