Offered for sale by Caspar’s Place is a fabulous Persian engraved 875 silver cigarettecase or calling card case. It isdecorated with a detailed, hand chased Islamic design of flowers, birds &foliage. It is also embellished with anapplied solid gold crowned lion holding a scimitar, silhouetted against a sunburst. This lion and sun motif is one of the mainemblems of Iran, based in ancient Persian traditions. The bottom of the inside of the box is goldwashed. There is a strap to keepcigarettes or cards in place. Boxes suchas these were commissioned during the mid-twentieth century by the Pahlaviimperial court of Iran and were given by the Shah to foreign leaders and dignitaries.

Based upon a partial maker’smark on the inside top of this case, and upon its style of decoration, Ibelieve this case was made by Muhammad Taghi Zofan, the royal court silversmithduring both the late Quagar and early Pahlavi eras. He was one of the most famous and bestIranian silversmiths of the twentieth century.Thecase is also marked with the Persian mark indicating it is 0.875 pure silver (versus925 for sterling). The 84 hallmarkrepresenting a silver standard or purity of 87.5% was introduced to Persia bythe Russians in the early 1900s.

This case is NOT monogrammed. It is in very good estate condition, although with the patina of old tarnish and fine scratchesto be expected with age and use. The piece’sprice reflects its condition. This remarkablecigarette case will make a lovely addition to any silver collection.

The case weighs approximately 5.49 troy ounces. It is roughly 4.75” long by 3.125” wide andis quite shallow.
