From an old collection we acquired from a gentleman in the Tacoma, Washington area in April of 2017. This is a rare combination mineral specimen from the Hollinger Mine, Porcupine District, Timmins Area in Ontario, Canada. The specimen consists of rich steel gray petzite veins that cut through a blocky quartz matrix. The petzite occurs in association with chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite. Most of the dark material is petzite, the rest is pyrrhotite. There are a few small specks of native gold on the face of the quartz, which can be seen with a loop. The piece is very rich in petzite and is from a very famous Canadian gold locale. It measures 7.5 x 3.8 x 3.4 cm in size, weighs 2.9 ounces, and it comes professionally labels with our label and three earlier labels, one of which, and part of the description above, comes from Matt Dye with Timberwolf Mining Company who is a Colorado Geologist and considered an expert on telluride minerals. The old reference number and name-location on the piece looks like the kind they use at museums and this piece might have come out of a local museum in Ontario sometime in the past. The mineral petzite, Ag3AuTe2, is a soft, steel-gray gold-silver-telluride mineral generally deposited by hydrothermal activity. It forms isometric crystals, and is usually associated with other rare tellurium and gold minerals, often with silver, mercury, and copper.
This is a rare gold ore specimen from a very difficult to obtain locality and should be of high interest to collectors who specialize in Canadian and worldwide gold, and rarer telluride, mineral localities. The Hollinger Mine was discovered in 1909 and operated from 1910 until 1968. During that period 65,778,234 tons of ore were milled, producing 19,327,691ounces of gold, indicating an overall grade of 0.29%.
