Fountain Pen

The beauty of the Kanazawa-haku (gold leaf) and the traditional techniques have joined together to release a premium masterpiece, the Kanazawa-haku fountain pen “Fujin Raijin (the Wind God and the Thunder God).”

Usually, a gold leaf is made by beating and extending the foil to a thickness of just one ten thousandth of a millimeter. This is done by using a foil beating machine with the edges trimmed to a square. We have broken the square gold leaf again into fragments and pasting them together. We applied Momi Chirashi, a traditional technique used in a folding screen or a painting on a fusuma (Japanese sliding doors) since ancient time. By pasting these random forms of gold leaves together one by one by all hand crafted, it creates a sense of depth giving an elegant glow to the one-of-a-kind body.

We have added Fujin Raijin-zu, a representative design of Japan as well as a masterpiece of Rinpa, on its Kanazawa-haku body using a remarkable hiramakie technique, bringing together the tradition and the elegance in the fountain pen. It also applies the complete airtightness “Slip & Seal Mechanism” of the popular “#3776 Century” series that prevents ink from drying out in the pen, therefore allowing those who only use the pen once or twice a year writing with fresh new ink.

By applying the traditional technique developed in the history, the fountain pen has an elegant finishing reminiscent of a painting of a folding screen.

The master craftsmen of Kanazawa produce some of the world\'s finest gold leaf, in an array of shimmering colours. In accordance with an ancient technique - Momo Chirashi - Platinum take this gold leaf then tear and fold it into smaller unique shapes. These are then painstakingly applied to the barrel of the pen, resulting in a delicately textured surface that captures and reflects light with a depth that normally applied gold leaf cannot match. The design upon the barrel of each pen is unique thanks to the process of applying the designs by hand, each Fujin - that\'s the wind god - and each Raijin - that\'s the thunder god - is subtly different. This coupled with the entirely unique application of the gold leaf means that no two pens are alike - each truly is one of a kind.Underneath the opulent design, the pen is the same great #3776 Century design that we\'ve all come to know and love. The Platinum #3776 Century range features the \'Slip and Seal\' airtight cap. The innovative new screw-on cap system uses an inner plastic seal with a strong spring. The primary benefit of this system is improved storage ability - the ink will not dry out even if left for over a year. An added benefit is improved resistance to leaks due to pressure changes. An additional benefit of the Slip and Seal cap is that Platinum approve the use of their pigment inks in these pens. Platinum pigment inks are waterproof and lightfast but are risky to use in normal pens unless you clean the pen out after every use. Platinum guarantee that Platinum Slip and Seal pens are safe to use with Platinum Carbon and pigment inks as your everyday ink.The 14kt gold nib of the #3776 is a beautiful piece of work - made in-house at Platinum, and all are hand-tested at the factory. This nib and feed is the same as that used in the legendary Nakaya Urushi pens.Uses Platinum ink cartridges. Supplied with a converter for use with bottled ink. Platinum recommends Platinum Fountain Pen Ink, though of course any quality bottled ink can be used.Weight 18.8g, 140mm long closed, 120mm open, 155mm posted. 15.4mm max. barrel diameter. The #3776 name comes from the height in metres of Mt.Fuji, the highest and most beautiful peak in Japan.Supplied in a luxury paulownia wood gift box.

TECHNOLOGY: FROM PLATINUM

The innovative cap contains a unique “Slip & Seal” mechanism that prevents ink from drying out in the pen. Meanwhile, a newly redesigned nib and feed regulate the ink flow. Founded in 1919, Platinum Pens is now nearing a full century of achievement. The #3776 “Century” celebrates this approaching anniversary and continues Platinum Pens’ tradition of technological innovation. With Platinum Pens, the pleasure of writing and the use of fine writing instruments will always be evolving.

The #3776“Century” Fountain Pen what qualities make for the ideal contemporary fountain pen? Sleek design, comfortable writing balance, smooth flow, and fast-drying ink… At the request of customers, we at Platinum Pen have gone back to the basics to address these issues. Every part and mechanism has been carefully studied and re-engineered. The result is the #3776 “Century,” designed on the base model of the popular #3776 series pens.

◆SLIP & SEAL MECHANISM:

It has normally been thought difficult to make an airtight pen with a screw-type cap. If not sealed tightly, the following problems can result:

1. Ink drying out due to moisture evaporation.

2. Problems with dried ink if the pen is not used for three to six months.

3. It can be necessary to clean the pen using our Ink Cleaner Kit or even to repair or replace the nib itself if the damage due to dried ink is too severe.

At the request of customers, we at Platinum Pen Company have gone back to the basics to deal with this problem. This is the first fountain pen which has our unique “Slip & Seal” structure in a pen with a screw-type cap. Thanks to this innovation, currently being patented, it is possible to have a screw-type cap with complete airtightness. Changes of the amount of ink by time with a cap.

About the Platinum #3776 Fountain Pen

The original #3776 series was designed by the late writing expert Haruo Umeda, known as “Mr.Fountain Pen,” along with the design team at Platinum Pen Company. Their aim was simple- to create the ideal fountain pen.

The #3776 was made available to the public beginning in 1978. After just six months, over 150,000 pens had been sold, and its popularity has been maintained ever since. #3776 expresses the height in meters of Mt. Fuji, the highest and most beautiful peak in Japan.

We Platinum Co., has started to solve these problems more than five years ago. We made several samples of a nib and feeder according to 40,000 writing data of Nakaya(Platinum\'s subsidiary). From 2009 to 2011, we have updated almost all machineries for making fountain pens and have made a new mold for not only a feeder and a nob, but also all parts of \'\'Motosu\'\' and \'\'Century\'\'. \'\'Motosu\'\' and \'\'Century\'\' are entirely new fountain pen by new design, new machineries and new mold.
