BigShot

Releasedin 1971, the Polaroid Big Shot may be the most iconic art-worldcamera, thanks to the creator of art-world icons- Andy Warhol. Lookup Andy Warhol and Big Shot, and you will find countless articles andretrospectives all over the world, many on exhibit today! Hespecifically used his Big Shot to take hundreds of images ofcelebrities, which he later made into his famous screen printings.

Whathe liked about it was that it was almost impossible to take a badpicture with it. It is entirely tuned to portrait photography andrequires no special skills to use. Look through the viewfinder andline up the focusing square, then pull the shutter. That is all thereis to it.

Itonly shoots with a majicube flash(which you can still find on and in thrift shoppes/ flea markets/ yard sales), and it shootspackfilm type 100. Currently Fuji FP100c is the kind of film youwould use, but soon there may be a version put out by Supersense,Catlabs, New 55, or Impossible. The flashes never go bad, and thefilm life can be prolonged by refrigeration.

Thesize and shape of this camera are testament to their “one trickpony” status! It is olive green with a long shape, aviewfinder/rangefinder that looks like a periscope, and has a verylarge lens. It looks more like a bazooka then any camera you might befamiliar with! Those who understand portrait photography canunderstand the reason behind the long lens(to get rid of the giantnose effect of a shallow lens), but the rest can just enjoy perfectpictures.

Iam a huge fan of this camera. I try to shoot a portrait of every newperson to enter my painting studio. It reminds me of conversations, ideas, and critiques that help me along my journey as an artist. Isuggest you try this with visitors to your house. Famous DirectorJohn Waters has been doing it for years!

Thoughthis is one of my favorite Polaroid cameras, it does not alwaysweather terribly well. The pull handle on the back is almost alwayslong gone, and the bottom stub of plastic under the pinch triggershutter is usually gone as well. Tiny chips often form at thejunction of the body to the lens box. The shutters don\'t alwaysspring back up fully after a shot, so you have to push them upsometimes before taking the next shot. All of these traits do NOTaffect the picture taking ability of the cameras one bit! Whether youare buying one of my cameras or another person\'s, the only truedetermination is whether they have been tested with film and flash!

Allof my Big Shots have been fully and successfully tested.
