James Nixon (1741-1812) was among the finest English miniaturists of the 18th century and has just in recent years begun to be fully appreciated. He exhibited at the RA from 1772-1805 and was painter to The Prince Regent and Duchess of York. His miniatures of children are of particular excellence and are highly prized. (see Bonhams April 27 2005, LOT 83 of a child, $31,894). As fine as the portraits, the solid 18k gold bracelet frames are as fine as I have seen and rival in workmanship the gold work of the early Roman and Anglo-Saxon periods.
