Post-WWII 1945 Polish DP Camp Dachau-Allach Six Stamp Perforated Unwatermarked Souvenir Sheet on White Paper VF MNH! NGAI

Background: Following the liberation of the Dachau concentration camp by American forces on April 29, 1945 a series of stamps and souvenir sheets were produced for the Polish Committee at Dachau-Allach to raise funds and for use on outgoing mail. A series of four stamps in three different denominations and four colours were issued on August 1, 1945. On November 1, 1945 sheets with six stamps of different colours and five different denominations were printed. Sheets of this type can be found perforated, imperforate, watermarked or unwatermarked, on white or yellowish paper and some exist with the upper-left stamp inverted or missing entirely. It is estimated that approximately 20 000 sheets inclusive of all of the various types were printed. Sheets printed on yellowish paper are far less common than those printed on white paper and watermarked sheets with the cubic watermark ascending from left to right are also less common than sheets with the watermark descending from left to right. This lot offers a very nice perforated souvenir sheet printed on plain white paper without any watermark, without gum as issued.

Reference and Condition: This sheet is listed in various specialized catalogues such as the German Muller catalogues. My standard reference for this material is the English language handbook produced by Chris Kulpinski (Polish Displaced Persons in Germany 1945-48, 2004). This handbook identifies this particular sheet as # 9a, perforated on white unwatermarked paper. This example is in very-fine overall condition, never-hinged and without gum as issued and with crisp edges and corners but for some light scuffing at the lower right corner.
