Early/Pre WWII US Cavalry Division Patch for the 65th Cavalry Division.
This weave on this one looks like it was probably made by GEMSCO, US manufacture original cotton embroidered on wool with typical WWII black cotton mesh backing , cut-edge.
The patch for the 65th was approved in early 1924 with the Division allocated to Illinois, Michigan and Wisconsin.
The majority of the Cavalry Units were assigned to either the Army Organized Reserve or the National Guard until the mid/late-1930\'s. Patches were manufactured for these units during the late 1920\'s through the middle/late 1930\'s. Most were not \"Officially Authorized\" but like most of those \"unauthorized\" patches they were allowed for wear by discretion of the local commander.

Only two Cavalry Divisions were active as divisions during WWII. The First saw combat in the Pacific, the Second did not see combat and was de-activated.
By April of 1942 all the Cavalry Divisions except for the 1st and 2nd were disbanded and broken up into smaller units and mostly attached to various Infantry and Armored Divisions.
The old division patches could be worn on the right shoulder to designate a previous unit and a few were worn as pocket patches authorized for local wear only.
