Inthe cold of winter Bessie Lou was feeling isolated. She hated being cooped upin her little cabin in the woods. The snow drifts were heaped around the yard;the hush of winter made her feel disconnected from her friends. She was tiredof trying to amuse herself. She longed for companionship. The little lad fromdown the street shoveled her a path from her front door to Pine Road. Bessieput on her galoshes, her big overcoat, scarf, and mittens and started towardstown. It was a bit of a walk but at last she arrived at Center Street. Shestopped first at the Good Day Bakery whereshe perused the bulletin boardfor activities offered. Ice hockey, basketball, bowling leagues; nothing struckher as anything she wished to get involved in. She continued her walk down thestreet in search of inspiration. In passing the Home for Orphans, she suddenlyhad an urge to backtrack. She had passed the building many times, just takingit for granted. This time she studied the shabby gray tall structure, the bigheavy door was punctuated by an evergreen wreath with a red bow. The GoodShepherd Home for Little Orphans, read a sign over the doorframe. She gingerlyapproached the door and rapped timidly, then a bit more earnestly. A tall, thinlady answered the door. She had a kindly face, but looked weary. \"Pardonme, I don\'t wish to intrude, but I felt drawn to your facility for some strangereason. I\'m wondering if you might be in need of a bit of help.\" \"Ohdear. We really could use some extra help, but we have no room in our budget. We welcome volunteers if you\'ve a mind for that sort of thing. Why don\'t youstep inside from the cold?\" Bessiewas at once glad she had come. Her heart was stirred by what she saw. Tiny totsand older children too, that were in need of Mothering. As anyone knows\"Mothering” is an art. The maternal instincts inside her plunged into thepleasant duties of brushing hair, reading stories, listening, and lots of hugs. She left that day feeling that she had received far more joy than she had knownin a long time. Since her first visit she has returned many, many times. She has also rallied her friends into what they call, \"The MothersClub\". Each member makes volunteers hours at the Home. For those who arestill working and unable to donate time, she has enlisted themtomakemuch needed blankets, with the hope that when they retirethey might want to pursue the art of mothering an orphan.

Generationsago thrifty mothers made sock dolls for their children using whatever they hadto work with. Bits of fabric, socks and imagination were used to create softplayful toys. We are pleased to continue a tradition that is both earthfriendly and entertaining. Bessie is made from new socks and is 15\" tall. She carries a wee kitty in her arms and also has a quilt to keep kitty warm (both are removable).
