History
Located in Staffordshire, the Shelley Potteries was previously know as Wileman & Co., who also traded as The Foley Potteries. In 1862,Joseph Ball Shelley joined the potteries. In 1896 his son, Percy Shelley, become the Sole Proprietor. It remained a Shelley family business until 1966. Shelley is probably best known for it\'s Fine Bone China \'Ärt Deco\' ware.
Mabel Lucie Attwell (1879-1964) was a British illustrator, who became known for her cute, nostalgic illustrations of small children, which were based on her daughter, Peggy. During her career her illustrations appear on postcards, advertisements, posters, books and eventually were made into figurines and dolls.
By the 1920\'s she was an admired artist but it was her affiliation with Shelley Potteries that led her into design as well.
In 1926, Shelley Potteries commissioned Mabel Lucie Attwell to produce designs for children\'s china ware where she portrayed children, animals and elves called \'Boo Boo\'s\". Her success continued and from 1937, a series of children figurines, based on herillustrations, were introduced, all of which were named.
From illustrator to designer, Mabel Lucie Attwell was one of the most prolific and well-known female designers of the 20thCentury.
Item
The item for sale is a figurine, Lil Bill, handmade and hand decorated. It was made by Shelley China Club in association with \'The Old Chintz Company\' only for the Shelley China Club USA in 1997.
They were sold as a pair, Lilibet and Lil Bill, in a limited edition of 1000. (I\'ve also listed Lilibet.) Both do not have the written number or the 1000 on the base. So, I believe the two I have listed were \'prototypes\' and therefore not numbered.
Dimentions: 15cmsH x 5cmsDiam.
Condition
The figurine is in an excellent pre-owned condition without any apparent damage or flaws.
