Miller, born Reuben Aaron Miller in Rabbittown, Georgia, is most famous for his “whirligigs” and metal cutouts, often portraying animals. He began to work in a cotton mill at the age of 12, farmed, and was later ordained as a minister for the Free Will Baptist Church. Cut from tin and painted with enamel, the human or animal figures on his whirligigs were attached to lumber, bicycle parts, scrap metal, or salvaged furniture. Miller’s hilltop yard became a marvel of artwork that spun in the wind, attracting local attention including that of the Athens-based band R.E.M., who set a twenty-minute video, “Left of Reckoning” amidst the whirligigs in his yard, images of which recur in the music video for the song “Pretty Persuasion.” Gaining fame amongst folk-art collectors, Miller began to make more free-standing animal cutouts, such as the crawfish, snake, and dinosaur that are part of this sale. Teal with red feet, facial features and plates, the dinosaur exhibits Miller’s cheerful animation, while the white polka-dots and small, tapering legs are examples of the fluid abstraction of his figures. Similar subjects appear in his drawings, often accompanied by the phrase “Lord Love You.” His work has been shown at the Georgia Museum of Art, the High Museum of Art in Atlanta and the New Orleans Museum of Art.
