17 - 18c Russian Orthodox Icon \"The Virgin of The Sign\". Wood, tempera, gesso, hand painted on silver, has little restoration. Size 31 x 27 cm (12.2\" x 10.6\" x 1\").
The Virgin is portrayed in the icon with hands lifted in prayer for the whole world. In the circle on her breasts is the God-Child, the Savior Emmanuel. This iconography is related to Orans, an ancient form used to depict the Virgin. In Russia the half-length depiction of Orans received the name “The Sign” after the miracle of the Novgorod icon in 1170. The representation of the virgin with an orb in her hands is an iconographical peculiarity.
