1782 WILLIAM PENN PAMPHLET
\"TO THE CHILDREN OF LIGHT IN THIS GENERATION, CALLED OF GOD..\" William Penn (October 14, 1644 – July 30,1718) was an English real estateentrepreneur, philosopher, and founder and \"absolute proprietor\" ofthe Province of Pennsylvania, the English North American colony and the futureCommonwealth of Pennsylvania. He was an early champion of democracy andreligious freedom, notable for his good relations and successful treaties withthe Lenape Indians. Under his direction, the city of Philadelphia was planned and developed. In 1682, James Duke of York , the future JamesII of England, handed over a large piece of his American holdings to William Penn. This landincluded present-day Pennsylvania and Delaware. Penn immediatelysailed to America and hisfirst step on American soil took place in New Castle in 1682. Religious conversion -Despite the dangers, Penn began to attend Quaker meetings near Cork. A chance re-meeting with Thomas Loeconfirmed Penn’s rising attraction to Quakerism. Soon Penn was arrested forattending Quaker meetings. Penn became a close friend of George Fox, thefounder of the Quakers, whose movement started in the 1650s during the tumultof the Cromwellian revolution. Penn traveled frequently with Fox, throughEurope and England. He also wrote a comprehensive, detailed explanation of Quakerism along with atestimony to the character of George Fox, in his introduction to theautobiographical Journal of George Fox. In effect, Penn became the first theologian, theorist, and legal defender of Quakerism, providing its written doctrine andhelping to establish its public standing.
