This sale is for a RARE VICTORIAN ERA HORSE CARRIAGE SALESMAN SAMPLE with LANDAU STYLE LEATHER ROOF (see pics). Landau refers to a roof style that can be raised and lowered. Overall length of this item is 29 inches and is constructed of steel, leather and wood. The body is a combination of solid wood, sheet metal (curved areas) and leather (seats). The suspension is all steel. The wheels are a combo of wood and steel. Thereare no welded parts on this item (pre-electricity) and all joined pieces are either riveted or hammer-welded. Seller believes this to be a salesman sample but it could also have been a toy. There are no makerslabels or marks anywhere on the item. Date of manufacture is also unknown butthis itemlikely dates to the 1870\'s.

The landau roof can be lowered and raised via hinged areas on the roofs metal framework (see closeup detail of the hinges).

This carriage measures 29 inches long, 18 inches tall (with roof raised) and 12 inches wide.

Condition: Overall condition is quite nice for its age. The carriagewas recently taken apart for cleaning purposes. The suspension sections had some heavy surface corossion and have been cleaned using a fine rotating brass wire wheel. The rear suspension section has been reattachedusing new wood screws (old screws could not be re-used). The leather on the roof sectionsis quite dry and in need of some leather conditioner. The front suspension pivot screw was damaged and has been repaired using a bolt attachment. The old attachment was just a screw which was broken off. Thebroken off screw portion was removed anda much more robust1/4 inch bolt attachment was added. The wheel hubs were orginally held in place with bent over nails. The nails were removed and replaced with cotter pins. Nothing else was done to this carriage.

Most of the metal on this carriage still has (to a degree) some surface corossion.

NOTE: There are twoleather patch repairson thefront roof section. These are clearly old repairs.

SHIPPING: Due to the delicate nature of this item, the carriage will ship is two boxes. The body will ship in one box and the suspension sections in the other. Both suspension sections are easy to reinstall.
