RARE 1882 NOVELTY PUNCH JUDY TOBY DOG BOTTLE STOPPER ENGLISH STERLING FIGURAL:

This is an extremely rare, probably one of a kind, 19th century mechanical novelty bottle stopperdepicting \"Punch\" with his dog \"Toby\", of \"Punch & Judy\" fame. It is sterling silver, hallmarked with the London date mark \"G\" for 1882, and the maker mark \"LD\" for Louis Dee. Louis Dee was a well respected London silversmith known for hisimaginative novelty designs. There is also the diamond shaped registered mark for June 7, 1879.The stopper depicts Punchperched on the side of the bottle neck with legs wrapped around it... holding onto handles attached to the sides of the stopper. His body hinges in the back, so that the stopper can be lifted out with the little crook on his back. Punch also hinges at his hands so there is a lot of movement when you press down on the tab to lift out the stopper. Toby sits on top of the stopper as if to mock Punchtrying to stay on the side of the bottle. The stopper rotates around within a silver ring so Toby can face any direction. All of thesilver pieces are hallmarked, thecollar of the bottle is hallmarked, along with Punch\'s arm, and the pieces of the stopper itself. Thestopper isalso marked \"Patent\". The top lip of the silver mount on the bottle is engraved \"Love & Harvey 35 Bd des Capucines\" which was the retailer in Paris. The silver portion measures 4\" tall by 2 1/4\" across. Unfortunately, the bottle is gone, with only the fragment of the applied handle there. The stopper has a large chip out of the bottom, but still fits nicely in the bottle top for display purposes. The inside of the bottle lip has some cracks and chip. The original silver pin hinge is missing so punch comes off in two pieces (easy to replace). The silver lip around the top of the bottle where the engraved retailers mark is located has a split in the seam on one side where it was attached (not a big deal or noticeable). The weight of the entire piece is 236.0 grams. This is an incredible piece for any collector of Punch & Judy memorabilia, or any bottle stopper collector. You will neverfind another one like it!
