RARE 18C/19C CHINESE CARVED BURLWOOD DRAGON BELT HOOK HANDLE FROM A SCHOLARS BOX:

Description....For your consideration is presented a 18c/19c Chinese finely carved burlwood dragon belt hook handle being a quite rare size of 5\" long and style for a burlwood belt hook that was later used as a handle for a Scholar\'s desk box. This handle was produced in China during the late 18c to the early 19c or in my opinion sometime around c1780s to the c1830s. The subject matter is very similar to the jade belt hooks having a mature dragon head facing the head of a full bodied chilong or young dragon surrounded by a mass of clouds. The carved details are absolutely fabulous as the large dragon head has actually more details than the jade counterparts with a great open mouth full of teeth and the eyes are equally great as well as the small dragon\'s head and feet. I had removed this handle from a equally well carved wood box which was sold many years ago but I had kept the hook which was missing its round button to the underside when it was most likely mounted with small wooden pegs as you can see he two small areas to the backside. If one so desired another button would not be difficult to attach either in wood, jade or hardstone.
Condition.....Excellent with no chips, cracks, losses or restorations other than mentioned above where the button to the reverse side was removed and mounted to a wood box which looked like it was done some time around c1900 but the box was from the mid 19c that it was attached to. So other than the two small areas where the pegs are still inserted there are no other items to mention just a wonderful old carving.
