AN EXTREMELY RARE 18TH CENTURY STAVED WOODEN \"TAVERN\" TANKARD, PROBABLY CONNECTICUT, 1760-1780 IN THE ABSOLUTE BEST ORIGINAL WINDSOR GREEN PAINTED SURFACE WITH GREAT PATINA AND HAVING A VERY RARE ORIGINAL TIN TOP HANDLE AND IRON AND TIN LOCKING DEVICE.

This GREAT wooden tankard is a great early example. The SURFACE IS THE BEST ORIGINAL WINDSOR GREEN PAINT AND IT HAS A DEEP OLD PATINA. IT HAS THE BEST ORIGINAL IRON AND TIN LOCKING DEVICE ON THE TOP AND A VERY RARE ORIGINAL TIN TOP HANDLE AS WELL.
IT IS IN A VERY LARGE SIZE AND WITH THE ADDITION OF THE LOCK I FEEL THIS WAS USED IN A TAVERN OR PUBLIC ROOM.
The CONDITION is Wonderful AND COMPLETELY ORIGINAL. This great tankard still retains its original wrought iron bands.
The original top still has its original hand wrought iron nail holding it on.
The lock is very rare, I have never seen another like this.

This GREAT TANKARD is made of Native White Pine and maple. The carved one piece handle has wonderful detail. The staved body and top has a 2 1/2\" taper from top to bottom.

The following is an excerpt from \"THE COLLECTOR\'S ILLUSTRATED ENCYCLOPEDIA OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION, by George C. Neumann and Frank Kravic, \"... following the barrel making skills of the cooper, wooden tankards were made constructed of slats, a fitted bottom, and wooden or iron retaining straps. Carved handles and lips completed the piece....\"

This great tankard conforms to the description above. It is constructed out of pine slats held together by iron bands, the bottom is fitted and the carved pine handle completes its construction. For a similar example see the above book \"Collectors Illustrated Encyclopedia of the American Revolution\" by Neumann and Kravic, page 104.

Great large size being 11 1/2\" tall, 14 1/2\" with the tin handle, 6\" across at the top and 8 1/2\" at the bottom.
Nice condition with only very minor losses. The iron bands are slightly loose and have shifted through the years from shrinkage, (see photos).
