RARE 18TH C CREAMWARE BLUE SHELL EDGE FEATHER EDGE DINNER PLATES CREAM WARE
A rare set of four creamware dinner plates with asymmetrical shell edge decoration highlighted in dark blue. France, each marked CHANTILLY impressed - ca 1780-1800
This set of creamware dinner plates is a rare find. The set is early with an asymmetrical shell edge with knot. Each plate measures 9 3/4\"in diameter. The cream ware body is as light as a feather and the plates were press molded and beautifully potted. The color is definitely creamy (more yellow than white), which was difficult to capture in the photos. The plates have no foot ring and eachplate is marked with an impressed \"Chantilly\", as well as the number 3.
The Chantilly factory was in production from 1730 to 1800 in Chantilly in Oise, France. They were known for soft paste porcelain. The company was purchased by Christopher Potter, an Englishman and manager of the company in 1792. The factory experienced heavy competition from Sevres, as well as Wedgwood and closed by 1800. It is my feeling that the plates were produced sometime around 1780. There is a reference to feather edge ware being produced at Chantilly in \"Collector\'s Guide to Feather Edge Ware\" by Lisa S. McAllister on page 33.ConditionThe plates are in excellent condition considering their age. There are no cracks, hairlines, or repairs. There is no crazing. There is wear to the glazing on the shell edges and some small flat surface chips (see detail photos) - light scratches commensurate with age and use. Guaranteed authentic, this is a beautiful and hard to find set that will make a welcome addition for the collector/dealer of cream ware, shell edge ware, or feather edge ware. Reasonable offers will be considered.
