Description

A GREAT WILLIAM AND MARY CONNECTICUT BANNISTER BACK ARMCHAIR, Circa 1730-1750 in great condition in WONDERFUL OLD BLACK PAINT OVER THE ORIGINAL RED STAIN.

A period, first quarter 18th Century William and Mary American Bannister Back Armchair with a fully developed and scrolled carved TRIPLE CROWN crest, a highly developed and turned acorn finial, FOUR BOLD split and conforming banisters, a shaped bottom crest, AND GREAT SCROLLED ARMS all in a GREAT OLD 19TH CENTURY BLACK PAINTED SURFACE WITH OLD VARNISH OVER THE ORIGINAL RED STAIN.

This chair is from the WETHERSFIELD, CONNECTICUT AREA AND DATES CIRCA 1730-1750. The shape of the nicely carved crest and arms are indicative of that area as well as the distinctive finials. There is a well documented example with a Churchhill Family of Wethersfield, CT provenance in the Nutting Collection at the Wadsworth Athenuem in Hartford, CT.

This chair still retains its original highly developed top crest, the bottom crest, the bannisters, stretchers and seat lists. Every original wooden peg is intact.

The seat is an old 19th century rush with only slight losses.

THE SURFACE IS FANTASTIC.
The Black paint dates to the mid 19th century as does the crackled varnish. It is well worn and has nice patina. It is over the original red stained surface underneath.

This great chair stands 46\" tall. The seat height is 19\" and is 24\" across.

The feet were professionally extended about 20 years ago by the last collector. The cabinet maker did an extremely fine job and matched to surfaces perfectly. They are extended below the bottom stretchers.
