If there is such a thing that an old item can “speak”, this isthat item. This sale presents an antique needlepoint picture housed in theoriginal ornate frame. The outside dimensions are 15 ½ x 13 inches, with a viewing area measuring 13x 10 ½ inches.

These old needlework pieces are getting harder and harder tofind. This picture was hand stitched using silk thread on silk and features awidow next to an urn top monument with billowy foliage in the background. Thewidow is standing under a weeping willow tree, and leaning on the monument witha hankie in her hand. The ladies hair, face, hand and neck are all watercolorpainting and have been executed very well. The urn at one point had thedeceased person’s name on the front, but it has degraded with age. Although Iwrote on the one picture that this needs restoration, I believe I would leavethis as-is, and appreciate it for being all original.

The glass plate which covers the needlepoint is a reverse paintedpiece, with ornate floral blooms in each corner. The frame, which is originaland of the period, is wood with a gesso covering, which has been ornatelydecorated with gilded designs. Simply stunning.
