RARE Prosopotrope 4 Face Doll Head 1866 Mfg by Ozias MorseActon Mass

RARE Prosopotrope 4 Face Wood and Papier Mache Doll Head 1866 Mfg by Ozias MorseActon Mass

This is one of the most unusual dolls you will ever see. It is a shoulder head doll with4 faces inserted into the outer head or shellof long curls and a fancy hat with a shoulder plate designed with a moldedblouse. The different faces roll vertically and there is a wood dowel at the sides of thehead that attach to the outer wig and hat cover. The faces show her sleeping, awake, laughing and an expression that looks like she is talking. The head is 6\" doll from the bottom of the shoulder plate to the top of her hat. The shoulder width is 5\" across.

There is a paper on the inside of the shoulder plate that reads: Prosopotrope // Manufactured and Sold // by // Ozias Morse // West Acton, Mass. The label is difficult to read because the shoulder plate has curledin leaving just a small opening space to see and read this label. There are 2 pictures taken at different angles so you can see the mark in one pictureand the maker in the other picture. The side vie of the doll shows this curl in the shoulder plate that makes it difficult to show the complete label.

The doll head is very heavy and is made with some type of Papier Macheand composition combination. There is a long article about this dollin a book on Papier Mache Dolls. Itmentioned the doll was made of : \"... a composition with a paper pulp in the mixture\". However, while I think the outer portion with the wig and hatis made with this papier mache / composition material, but I think the head itself could be made of a carved wood. The paint on the faces is very thick andsturdy, but as the faces were turned over the years a lot of the paint has worn down on the areas that were protrudingand exposes towhat I think is the carvedwood.

I have great difficulty changing from face to face. If it is wood, wood can swell and change making it difficult to move smoothly. I have had it stored for some time, and it took me 2 days to carefully change from one face to the other. I do not like to force the faces to change as that could cause damage.

I am showing onepage with 4 picturesof the doll shown in the book and a close up of one of the pictures. The \"awake\" doll in the book is different than that sameface on my doll and the other expressions are also different. The shoulder plate pictured is plain, while mine has a moldedblouse. Mine has a ribbon on the blouse while the one in the book has a tie for her hat. It might be that these dolls hada variety oflooks.

It would be interesting to learn whether all the faces were carvedindividually, rather than mass produced, and that all dolls varied from one another. I know they are very rare.
