1890\'sPottery with Musical Movement
This listing is for a wonderfuloriginal antique German Stein. Made in the 1890\'s, almost certainly byReinhold Merkelbach, this is a musicalstein that has a concealed musical movement in the base. It comes withthe key and when wound up plays a cheerful tune. When you put the steindown on the table it continues to play to the end of the song and thenstops. When the stein is lifted in the air it keeps on playing (untilit needs to be wound up again). The pewter lid has an inscription inGerman \"E.F. Zur Erinnerung an deine Coleginnen 1895\" Which translatesas \"E.F. To remember your (female) colleagues 1895\". The text on theStein is also German and is a part of an old German Folk Song \"EinSträußchen am Hute, den Stab an der Hand
zieht rastlos der Wandrer von Lande zu Land.\", which translates as: \"Aposy on the hat, the staff on the hand restlessly the wanderer movesfrom country to country\". The edge of the stein and the thumrest alsorefer to music. This 1/2 litre stein measures 8\" high (the ceramicpart) and just over 10\" to the top of the pewter thumb rest. Conditionis superb! No chips, no cracks and no repair or restoration to thepottery, and also the pewter lid is in excellent original condition.There is some wear from age as you would expect. The winding key isattached with an old green ribbon. The musical movement on the insideis in good working condition and plays beautifully and very clear, thesong is a drinking song called \"Stradella\" (or maybe he was thecomposer, I\'m not sure).
