VINTAGE ANTIQUE \'MEMEMTO MORI\' SKULL RING

Description

Offered is a very unusual and RARE ANTIQUE MEMENTO MORI SKULL RING. I found this ring in an oldsteamer trunk full of vintage clothing and other old stuff I bought many years ago at an estate sale in Northern California. It is a very ornate and handmade looking piece. I thought it was really afascinating and interestingoldring and held on to it in my vintageand antique jewelry collection. I had it tested in the past to see if it was gold since it has no marking I can find. I was told IF gold, it is definitely below 10k in purity but may be gold filled, bronze or even pinchbeck metal.

As you can see by the pictures it has an unusual designsplit shank which possibly makes it somewhat adjustable if you push hard enough.

Right now it is approx. a size USA 9. Weight is approx. 7 grams.

Skull motifs, especially in rings. were very common Memento Mori motifs in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries.

Memento mori (Latin: \"remember that you have to die\") is the medieval Latin Christian theory and practice of reflection on mortality, especially as a means of considering the vanity of earthly life and the transient nature of all earthly goods and pursuits. It is related to the ars moriendi (\"The Art of Dying\") and related literature. Memento mori has been an important part of ascetic disciplines as a means of perfecting the character by cultivating detachment and other virtues, and by turning the attention towards the immortality of the soul and the afterlife. In art, memento mori are artistic or symbolic reminders of mortality.
