Rare British M1856 pioneer sawback with the original scabbard and frog by Samuel Brothers.Markings:
- ricasso: WD under the arrow -War Department acceptance mark used until 1895; crown with BR / 19 - probably Birmingham R.S.A.F. repair mark; partially illegible crown with B / 13 [?] - probably Birmingham R.S.A.F. inspection mark,
- edge of the blade, next to the hilt: B / 47 [?] under the crown, as above,
- top scabbard mount: 5/1893(May 1893) / M.3.W.R. 4 (unrecognised regimental mark),
- backside of the frog:SAMUEL BROTHERS / LTD / MAKERS & / CONTRACTORS / LONDON,
- tang - G I [?] - unrecognised.Samuel Brothers was established in 1830 on Ludgate Hill, London, and opened premises on Oxford Street in 1915, before moving to Bartholomew Place and then into Clerkenwell Green. In 1993 the company relocated its offices to the Headquarters of The Royal Logistic Corps upon invitation, where it remained until 2016, when it moved into Aldershot, the Home of The British Army.The Company supplied many London companies with livery and at the turn of the last century was reputed to have been one of the largest exporters of uniforms in Europe with four factories located in London.Description: single edged clean blade with sawback. Brass hilt with ribbed brass grip and single knucklebow, attached to the tang with four steel rivets. Scabbard made of black leather with brass moounts. Frog made of leather with maker\'s stamp on the back.Dimensions: total length in scabbard - 71,1 cm; without scabbard - 68,4 cm; blade\'s length - 55,4 cm; blade\'s width at hilt - 35 mm, thickness - 5,5 mm.Bibliography: Swords of the British Army, Robson, page 173.Condition report: good overall condition for the age with proper wear and minor damages. Blade (later sharpened) with some marks of rust and heavily blunted sawback. Hilt in very good condition with minor scratches and dents. The hilt was never dismounted. Leather on scabbard in great condition for the age with minimal wear and small natural cracks. Lower brass mounts with dents. Frog in very good condition.
