RARE& delightful English sterling silver vesta case

Thisis a wonderful and rare piece of English history!

Thefuture King & Queen of England visited Natal in South Africaduring the Boer War. This was presented by the then Dukeand Duchess of York (who later became King George V and Queen Mary).

Theinscription is a little faded but it is legible and it is 116 yearsold:

Thisdelightful sterling silver vesta or match case has an amazing, tighlyfitting closing mechanism! It snaps shut airtigh to protect whatwould have been an essential even life saving commodity: a dry match!

Ithas the following hallmarks:

\'A.& J. Z.\' for the famous silversmithsArthurS. Zimmerman and John Ulrich Zimmerman

\'LionPassant\' for Sterling Silver

\'Anchor\'for BirminghamAssayOffice

\'Letterb\'– Date letter for 1901

Theassay office and year letter marks are repeated on the inside of thelid. This would have been gilded originally and would have been agift fit for a King!

Itis overall in excellent condition as shown apart from some minorblemishes, tarnish and tiny dings.

Thisring is simple yet elegant in shape and style with an exquisitepatina on the deep rich colour.

Itweighs a solid and heavy 36g and is very tactile!

Itmeasures 5cm x 4cm x 1cm.
