A rare antique Chinese hard paste porcelain scholar’s brush rest, presumed Ming dynasty (early sixteenth century -Zhengde) or later in the Ming Dynasty Zhengde style, the brush rest is one of the implements found on the scholars table used by practitioners of calligraphy in China.  The porcelain modelled as a mountain with five peaks, possibly an allusion to the five sacred mountains of Daoist China.  The piece painted on one side with a mythical beast (reminiscent of a type of lion or horse) seemingly chasing flaming pearls, the reverse painted with lotus scrolls as shown.  There is evidence to the heaping and piling technique (concentrations of cobalt that have broken through glaze in firing and have oxidised black) and the biscuit foot rim has been trimmed with a knife.  There are pieces with comparable decorative elements within Ming Pottery and Porcelain by Soame Jenkins.  This lot offered here measures 5 ¾ inches long and stands 3 7/8 inches tall, it has survived in excellent condition with no damage and is offered as is clearly pictured.
