A rare and unusual sterling silver gem set portable sundial. It is hallmarked for London 1973 with the maker’s marks being GF. It has been unusually designed being an exactreplica of a Saxon examplediscoveredin 1938 during alternations to the cloister garth of Canterbury Cathedral. It consists of a silver tablet,inscribed with the names of the months and with hole through which a peg wasinserted. If the tablet was dangled from a chain, facing the sun, the positionof the peg’s shadow gave a rough idea of the time. Around its sides runs theinscription ‘[SA]LVS FACTORI [PA]X POSSESSOR[I]’: ‘Health to my maker, peace tomy owner. It comes complete with its box and paperwork showing it was number 68 of only 750 made.Itis in super condition being free from dings splits distortions and repairs.Itmeasures over 6.5 inches (16.3cms) long including the chain and peg by over 0.75 inch(2cms) wide and weighs 79 grams. A veryinteresting and rare piece.
