There were 2000 of these coins minted .

Homestake closed after 126 years of operation and produced 40 million ounces of gold.

In 1876 the original outcropping of gold was discovered in what would become the Homestake Mine in the Black Hills of South Dakota..a mine unparalled in longevity and productivity. Now more than 126 years and 40 million ounces later, the mine closure and reclamation activities have begun. The Homestake mine has been a constant throughout the years, whether in terms of providing exceptional employment opportunities, being an innovator in mining and milling processes, or by recognizing Environmental challenges and finding appropriate solutions. All the while Homestake continued to contribute to the Black Hills community... socially, politically, and monetarily. The last gold pour from the Homestake Mine was made in May of 2002. From this, 2000 one-half ounce gold coins were minted. These commemorative coins are intended to honor the history of this grand old mine and to recognize its contributions and importance to the Black Hills region and the state of South Dakota. Most importantly, the coins pay tribute to the thousands of men and women who worked at the Homestake Mine.

The coin is about 1 inch in diameter and features an image of the Yates Shaft on one side and the Homestake logo on the other. Inscriptions on the coin read \"Homestake Gold Mine - 40 million ounces\" on one side and \"Homestake, 1876-2002\" on the other.

The coins are sealed in a clear protective capsule and encased in a leatherette display box stamped with the Homestake logo inside. A certificate of authenticity is also included.

Homestake Mining Co. started operations in 1877 in Lead and gradually built an 8,000-foot-deep mine below the city. Thousands of miners dug out about 40 million ounces of gold in the 125-year life of the operation.

The company announced closure plans Sept. 11, 2000, and pulled the last ore out of the mine in early 2002. Mine employees and contractors demolished the milling complex buildings in 2002.
