Antique Japanese Boro Noragi

A very rare opportunity; boro mittens known as \'tebukuro\' in Japanese \'Te\' = hands + \'Bukuro\' = bag like.Various iterations of these mittens have different purposes such as being used on farms, fireman gloves and also fisherman gloves which was the primary use for these specific gloves. Executed using scrap indigo dyed fabrics in different shades patched together then insulated with raw cotton fibre for extra warmth and padding. Further down the line these were lined with wool when it became available from imports in the second half of the 1800\'s. Certain parts of the gloves have been repaired via the method of the continuous sashiko stitch for strength and longevity. The string attached on the end were simply a practical use to tie together and hang up at the end of a hard days work which is useful now for its decorative purpose. Suited for the true collector. Ideal for museums (even boro museums in Tokyo don\'t have these mittens). Unlikely to be seen again. c1850\'s (b/w the Edo & Meiji periods) Boro History - Japanese Boro is referred to as \"Tattered Cloth\" or \"The Fabric of Life\" quite literally as the type of textile represents Japan\'s impoverished past. The word \'Boro\' is linked and derived from the word \'Mottainai\' which is a term conveying a sense of regret concerning waste, and is still a strong trait adopted in today\'s society. The patchwork practice was utilized by the rural population of Japan, predominantly in the northern region, as they couldn\'t afford new clothing. This meant extensively patching and mending little scraps of fabrics over worn-out areas followed by the repair methods. In most cases, the fabrics were indigo dyed using the traditional \'Aizome\' method, which is said to be an ancient technique from 4000-5000 years ago from the ancient Egyptian times. The scraps of fabrics were often sewn together using the \'Sashiko\' needlework method (The Japanese Art of Quilting) to strengthen a single layer of fabric for patching worn cloth or quilting per se, and the purpose was to extend the overall life of the textile, whether it be a futon cover or a clothing article. Aesthetically, Sashiko is a contrasting running stitch worked in repeating or interlocking patterns. The closer the stitches, the more durable the garment therefore becomes.
