SIGNATURE: It is signed as shown with the block letter version of the Hawkes signature on the bottom outer edge.

PATTERN NAME AND REFERENCES: For reference I have included the picture of a decanter like this from page 72 of the book The American Cut Glass Industry T. G. Hawkes And His Competitors by Spillman. According to the caption, the cutting pattern was given the number 1401. It also states that the blank is shape #1307 and it was made by Steuben for Hawkes. This decanter can also be seen in figure P 515 of the book Collecting American Brilliant Cut Glass by Boggess. The P designates that they gave this piece their highest rating of Premium.

AGE: This piece was made sometime in the early 1900\'s.

BLACK LIGHT TEST RESULTS: Confirms American Brilliant Period (approximately 1876-1916)

MEASUREMENTS: 10-3/8\" tall and 7\" wide.

WEIGHT: 4.9 pounds

BLANK / GLASS CLARITY: This is evidently a blown blank by Steuben. A blank like this was surely very hard to create. To be picky, I will mention that the top hole was formed at a slight angle and the main body leans a bit from front to back. The glass is bright and clear.

CUTTING DETAILS: The main miters have good depth and the overall precision is very good. The ovals that are cut around the center hole provide a cool optical effect.

POLISHING QUALITY: The finish looks and feels very crisp.

CONDITION REPORT (ALWAYS VERY PICKY): The stopper is a replacement and is in great condition. It fits very well and looks absolutely fine in my opinion. The top rim of the decanter is in good shape, but I noticed a variation in the top to bottom thickness of it. I think this is actually caused from a variation in the height of the flat panel cutting below it. The decanter top hole looks very good. The pattern area is in near perfect condition and I had to look very closely to find just one pencil point sized nick on a side portion. The large hole in the center looks very good. The bottom is in great shape and shows typical wear scratches on the high spots. The interior looks absolutely fine by normal viewing or in a lighted cabinet. If you hold it up to the light and look closely from the bottom, there are some white colored spots present on the bottom portion of the interior. Because of their location they are not easily seen, but need to be mentioned to be accurate.

FINAL COMMENTS: I doubt that there are too many decanters out there like this and very rare could be a good way to describe it. Because of its unusual shape, it would certainly be a standout in any cut glass or decanter collection. Don\'t let this fabulous Hawkes piece pass you by too easily!

offerDING FORMAT: There is with a $9 starting price. This is my favorite way to sell even high-priced items. I will never under any conditions end my sales early to sell to an anxious buyer requesting a buy it now.

SHIPPING & INSURANCE: A flat rate for shipping with insurance included by USPS Parcel Select (formerly called Parcel Post) to anywhere in the U.S.A. will be $20. This method may take longer, but should save money for both of us. Occasionally Priority Mail is cheaper or about the same amount as Parcel Select with the current discounts. If so, I will use that quicker service if it is practical. I don\'t ship my cut glass outside of the U.S.A. Please don\'t ask me to make an exception just for you. I will gladly combine multiple purchases at a reduced rate based on the buyer\'s location.

I am a member of the American Cut Glass Association. I subscribe to the ACGA Code of Ethics. I regularly buy quality cut glass and I hope to have plenty more to offer in my future items. I\'m very much into cut glass, but I\'m not your typical cut glass collector and dealer. I prefer to enjoy this glass for short periods of time and everything that I buy will eventually be sold. Because of this strategy I\'m able to sell even the most desirable and rare pieces that I can find and not keep them for myself. Many serious cut glass collectors have benefited because of this and I also hope to keep the casual or beginner buyers happy with some desirable cut glass also. Please check out my other current listings and bookmark my site or add me to your favorite sellers.

RETURN POLICY: Please offer with confidence, your satisfaction is always guaranteed. I offer a 14-day return privilege. If you are unsatisfied or if you feel the item was misrepresented, it may be returned provided the item is in original condition. If the return is the result of an error on my part, I will refund the shipping & insurance costs also. For questions please use the \"Ask seller a question\" link in the sale or you can phone me at 412-486-9727 during reasonable Eastern Standard Time hours. Payment

SALES TAX: Pennsylvania residents without a valid resale tax number are asked to please add 7% sales tax (6% PA. & 1% for Allegheny County) to your final purchase price when checking out. There will be no exceptions to this tax if you live in Pennsylvania and do not supply a valid resale number.

I accept the following forms of payment:
  • PayPal

Shipping & Handling

I will try my best to send out items within 24 hours of receiving payment. If this is not possible I will inform the buyer of the intended shipping date. Shipping including insurance will usually be given as a flat rate to anywhere in the U.S.A. If by some chance my flat rate amount is larger than the actual cost, I will refund the difference. I do not charge for packing materials & handling. I pack all items very carefully to ensure a safe arrival.
